Unheimlich
“Unheimlich” originates from German, describing a paradoxical state: both familiar yet strange, and cold, unreachable. This project draws on “ghostology” to explore the concept of “absence” in time, space, and body, with a focus on silence’s power. Through post-structuralist and postmodern lenses, it challenges the traditional philosophical emphasis on “presence” as clear and definite, while rethinking “absence” as a dynamic state closely tied to presence. Even in static images or silent footage, we can sense underlying movement and sound. This project reimagines “absence” as the unspoken fluidity within silence, using salt’s crystallization, dissolution, and precipitation to explore the flow of time and bodily perception. By creating a “ghostly realm” through material transformation and subtle sensory interactions, I aim to invite viewers into an unspeakable experience that blurs the boundaries between absence and presence, movement and stillness, sound and silence.
